6 Degrees café – Cozy café with suprising space|OOZN Design

The design brief of this project was very simple: make the café memorable and cozy. The café is to become a place where friends meet and socialize over a good cup of coffee. This ideology from the owner is directly implemented in the café’s name: 6 Degrees café  . This name comes from the theory of “six degrees of separation, where everyone is six or fewer steps away from any other person in the world. The rectangular floor plan consists of a 16m long shop front on the long side and thus it was more visually impactful from the street view to place the emphasis on the ceiling and the rear wall. The skin of timber slats were hand crafted by local carpenters who meticulously followed the elevations drawn by the architect. It is a very praise worthy note as local craftsmen has been marginalized through the increased application of technology; it is refreshing to see the application of hand craft and the details of such crafts be implemented into the café. It should be noted that as a lot of construction processes are being industrialized, local details and the crafting from the human hand has been almost omitted in the creation of personal spaces. I think it is great gestures from the architect to have local carpenters collaborate on the creations of a cozy space. These timber slats are spaced equally apart and cover the entire wall and ceiling to break the monotony of spatial heights while also covering up the HVAC system. These slates due to its varying heights and spacing also acts as an acoustic breaker, thus absorbing and reducing the overall background noise of the café. The interior comprises four types of seating area for the customer to choose from that reflects their mood. The finishes are chosen to reflect the cozy and relaxed theme. The belief is that the café’s main selling point for returning customers is not only the nice cup of coffee, but also the memorable, cozy and undulating spaces. By:Delia Chang
