Styrofoam Cups Sculptures | Tara Donovan

Cloud-like clusters of styrofoam cups create amazingly organic undulating surfaces in this piece titled Styrofoam Cup Sculpture by artist Tara Donovan. Measuring twenty feet wide and six feet deep, light passes through it as a soft, diffused glow with rings of darkness created by the walls of the cups. Her works of styrofoam cups incorporate seemingly banal materials to create surprising and complex sculptures which serve to reinterpret how we see the everyday things which fill our lives.

Donovan chooses to begin her styrofoam cups sculptures with a blank slate so to speak- deciding first on a material and then letting its nature guide her. She states,

In a sense, I develop a dialogue with each material that dictates the forms that develop. With every new material comes a specific repetitive action that builds the work.

Each work is considered by her to be site-specific and temporary.
