Fantastical Houses
Not with brick and mortar, not even with steel and glass but with scissors and glue!- “With scissors and glue, the first fantastical buildings were made.”
Matthias Jung has come up with a fresh new set of collages that consists of surreal constructions spread over vast isolated landscapes. He has fused disparate architectural elements in an order to make a scene which is unreal but surely admirable.
During his childhood, Jung used to visit his father’s photo lab. From that time onwards he started developing a certain interest in photo collages. His first set of collection in this series ‘Houses’, were released in early 2015.
Although the scenes formed are highly imaginative, the elements of the collage are arranged in a certain logic. This makes it similar to a ‘dream’ which stands somewhere between the real and the unreal. “The composition of the individual elements correlates to a logic, as if in a dream” explains Jung. The artist has tried to establish a harmony between the two, real and the unreal. It seems to be just like another landscape at the first glance, but slowly it unfolds its dreamlike portion and leaves the viewer in sheer amazement.
Jung re-imagines the whole landscape and puts in all the real and then just adds a tint of the unreal.  “A building has to first be stable and credible before I can add some ‘disorder’ – to let it fly, for example.” In one of his works, a house made of brick and mortar is floating amidst air and is tied to ground with a single string. Everything here is real except the idea of floating house.
His work is an example of a clean beautiful confusion that’s been created by removing the constraints that binds human vision, beyond reality.
