Twisted Museum

Twisted Museum of Bjarke Ingels Group is situated on the River Randselva, one hour north of Oslo. As the structure occupies both embankments of the waterway, it is built around an old bridge, serving as the only crossing, which is also located around a historic paper mill. AKT ll, Max Fordham, Davis Langdon and GCAM collaborated with BIG to design the 1,400 square meter structure which is scheduled to start construction in 2016.

The second bridge for the site was proposed as a simple beam that spans throughout the river, which was required due to the level difference from both the sides. The twist in the structure helps it to converge from a lower forested area, to the elevated hillside on the opposite end. The twist helps in creating a series of interconnected spaces, with the much wider location for the horizontal open gallery for larger installations to the north, meanwhile the vertical stacked galleries for media, paintings and sculpture to the south.

The information center and shop located at the south side greet the visitors and guests, with a café that offers view towards the outdoor environment by blending in with the surrounding landscape. The dual purpose staircase is what connects both the floors, which offers the choice of being used as a seating elements for viewing projections and performing arts.

Insulated glazed plans covered with UV films and brushed stainless steel were used as the sculptural façade to protect the museum’s artwork. For the purpose of controlling the flow of direct and indirect light, electrical solar shading was combined in the framing system to make the area brighter or complete dark.
