Air Traffic Control Tower at Istanbul Airport
Air Traffic Control is generally the loftiest and swankiest configuration in all of its surroundings. It is noticeable from a far off distance, let it be from the land or from the sky. It is the first structure that a person notices as soon as he/she lands down in a new city. All these characteristics of the structure invites for architecture that symbolizes the city or the region as a whole.
“We are developing a unique project inspired by the local architecture. That is why we have organized this contest, hoping that Airport Traffic Control Tower design would symbolically contribute great deal to Istanbul Airport and also will be the most important figure of Istanbul. We particularly asked contestants to get inspired from icons of Turkey” said Yusuf Akçayoğlu, CEO of İGA.
They have just revealed six design proposals that were submitted as entries to this competition. This includes the design by Zaha Hadid, Moshe Safdie, Grimsaw-Nordic, Massimiliano Fuksas, Pininfarina-Aecom, and RMJM Architects. The target was to develop something inspired from the authentic Turkish symbols. “Zaha Hadid got their inspiration from whirling dervishes; Moshe Safdie from Ottoman geometrical patterns; Massimiliano Fuksas from minarets; Pininfarina-Aecom from tulips; and RMJM Architects from seagulls of Istanbul. Grimsaw-Nordic, on the other hand, shared their work designed with a concept to complement the terminal building and airport design in general “revealed the press.
The ATC Tower site is restricted to an area of 5000 square meters and a height of 95 meters. The design evaluation of the competition entries has already commenced and the results will be out soon.
