The USTH (University of Science and Technology of Hanoi ) was established in 2009 through an intergovernmental agreement between Vietnam and France, it aims to become one of the leading training and research center. This project is entirely funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).The USTH Campus, located in a natural environment, inside the Hoa Lac High Tech Park, 30km east from Hanoi city, is designed as a “New Model University” Campus. The new campus will include facilities for administration, teaching and research, housing and student activities, services and infrastructure.
The project by Architecture-Studio offers to researchers and students a living area structured by landscape. Around and across the existing lakes, a front belt of all the main buildings, interconnected, creates an architectural frame to this landscape.
The USTH Campus is organized around a clear central open space, the «Water Park», which brings together all campus activities around a core dedicated to meetings and gatherings, but also to contemplation and thinking, in a preserved natural environment. The learning center, slightly elevated, draws the horizon line above the USTH entrance axis. Each of the six faculties buildings are aligned on the north side of the Waterpark. Teaching and administration areas take place at the front, all linked together with the peripheral gallery. Research and administration areas are designed as enclosed boxes, isolated from climatic constraints, integrating temperature and humidity control as well as air exhaust for laboratories equipment. At the South-West corner of the Waterpark, the dormitories district is organized along the water bank.
The presence of water, along with the tropical architecture of the buildings and their specific technologies, will embody the unique character of the USTH being a Vietnamese University leading in sustainability and renewable energy.
A landmark building
The Learning Center is the main entity of USTH. It is the place for students to developing knowledge by individual and collective working as well as lectures and conferences. The building draws the south limit of the waterpark. Elevated above the entrance axis, it embodies a gate to the USTH. Large elevated nave, detached from the contingencies, the Learning Center is the landmark building of the campus.
Students can access the study rooms at different levels: directly from the ground floor, or from the first level by the peripheral gallery that crosses the shared facilities and the faculties.
The interior space is a continuous space organized around a central nave where the floor is stepped in four successive stages hosting the reading rooms. At each level, the nave is flanked by two wings, on the south wing are the storage of books, on the north side overlooking the waterpark landscape, we find all the study rooms, for individual or collective work.
In the central hall, between ground floor and first floor, the conference room and the cafeteria complete the study areas. The large auditorium is located at the entrance of the campus, composing together with the learning center the main academic entities of the campus
