The new National Gallery’s extension is added to the set of cultural buildings designed by Herzog & De Meuron
Herzog & De Meuron announced during a presentation of their plans for the New National Gallery’s extension starting from 18 November until the 8th of January. After being part of the competition that contained; Zaha Hadid architects, David Chipperfield and Snøhetta, Herzog & De Meuron’s designs in collaboration with landscapes done by Vogt Landschaftsarchitekten were chosen.

The new Extension of Mies Van Der Rohe’s Gallery will be connected to the National gallery by an underground exhibition passage and the building’s main aim is to exhibit master pieces from the late 20th century.
“The goal of the new building at the Kulturforum is to end this fragmentation by uniting the 20th-century inventory that is currently spread over several buildings,” said a statement from the Kulturforum.

“Connecting and networking” was the main concept which Herzog & De Meuron followed in their proposal. The interiors were designed to respect this concept by creating multiple areas for people from different exhibition rooms to meet in and a “highly trafficked” mezzanine in the center to allow an overview of the whole structure. While the exterior design looks like a design of a gabled warehouse made of bricks.
