Do Ho Suh Embodies “Migration and Identity” through Full-Size Colorful Models

Korean artist Do Ho Suh tries to capture the concepts of migration and identity by the means of a colorful installation artwork, which was on display at the Victoria Miro Gallery in London. Suh’s artwork, titled “The Passage/s”, recreates hallways from his past homes in the form of a series that is meant to represent life.“I see life as a passageway, with no fixed beginning or destination,” says Suh. “We tend to focus on the destination all the time and forget about the in-between spaces. But without these mundane spaces that nobody really pays attention to, these gray areas, one cannot get from point a to point b.”

The hallway models are made of colored translucent fabric. The different colors represent the different homes in which the artist has lived his life, starting with his childhood home in South Korea and moving to all the apartments he has lived in as an adult, in Seoul, London, or New York.Another one of Suh’s installations which were on display in the gallery, “the Hub,” featured the structure of his London apartment. Joined with 9 other installations, they created together a walk-through that extended for the 25-meter length of the gallery.
