International Design Competition for Kaunas’ New Concert Center in Lithuania
Lithuanian Kaunas City Municipality has appointed London-based Malcolm Reading Consultants (MRC) to supervise a one-stage design contest for a new Concert Center in Kaunas. The project will be a landmark for Lithuania’s second largest city and the European Capital of Culture for 2022. It will include a new concert hall as well as multifunctional spaces for public and community events.
“Kaunas is a European city to watch – it has a distinguished architectural heritage and is rapidly achieving prominence as a key hub within the Baltics,” says Malcolm Reading, chairman of MRC which has also organized the Science Island International Design Contest in the same city last year. The competition was the most popular in Lithuania’s history and it had three winners: SMAR Architecture Studio from Spain and Australia, SimpsonHaugh and Partners from the UK, and Donghua Chen Studio from China.
“We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with Kaunas. This project is a perfect successor to the recent Science Island competition – a more complex building, setting a challenge to competitors in urban design, landscape, and satisfying technical requirements,” said Reading. “We are looking forward to a creative response from the global design community.”
MRC will be responsible for structuring the design brief, developing the criteria, helping with jury selection, as well as launching and running the competition. The preparations for the competition are on-going and the details will be announced when it launches early in summer to be concluded in fall 2017.
