Galaxy SOHO is Zaha Hadid Architects’ re-interpretation of the traditional Chinese courtyard. Lacking corners, the volumes and spaces created by the coming together of five main volumes- continuous and flowing in their own rights- exude an energy and directionality without a definite vector. The lines encourage visitors’ eyes to wonder and move across the forms, never reaching a point where they are held without means of escape. The new office/ entertainment complex built by SOHO China Ltd. is composed of four towers containing a total of 15 above-grade floors (12 office; 3 retail).
Located at the heart of Beijing, it is yet another example of China’s fast-becoming world class architectural scene. And yet another example of what buildings in general- urban buildings specifically- don’t have to be (rigid and plain).
