An Inspiring Pavilion for Poland in World Expo 2020 by WXCA

Warsaw-based WXCA will be designing the Polish Pavilion for the World Expo 2020 in Dubai, along with Bellprat. They were selected from over 30 submitted proposals. Pavilions for other countries include Austria’s Giant Watermill, Spain’s ultralight pavilion, and Germany’s pavilion by Graft.

The World Expo 2020 will be held in the United Arab Emirates, in Dubai. The theme of the Expo is “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”. It has three subthemes: Mobility, Sustainability, and Opportunity. Around 140 countries will be participating in the Expo, and it is expected to attract a crowd of 25 million people within its 6-month duration.

The World Expo 2020 Polish pavilion design:

The “open tree-like modular structure” of the Polish pavilion is inspired by the rich wildlife in Poland. The pavilion will house an exhibition with “kinetic floods of birds floating over visitors’ heads”. The integrated exhibition is in reference to the migratory birds that flock to Polland, “inspiring legends, connecting minds and creating the future”. The pavilion is designed to allow the exhibition to pop out of the building and welcome visitors.

The sculptural form of the pavilion opens out into the public plaza in front of it, and invites the visitors to “participate in the birds’ flight over Poland”. Similarly, the connection between the inside and the outside signifies the connection of Poland to the outer world. The “cultural and commercial exchange, social migration and the constant flow of goods and ideas” are the ways in which the dynamic Polish economy interacts and develops in the modern world. The open tree-like structure of the pavilion allows visitors to dine out in the open at the bakery or rest and contemplate the “flock of birds” that appears to be flying above them.

The pavilion and its integrated exhibition are designed to make visitors reflect on the relationship between man and nature. Also, the structure evokes the concept of mobility.  It is expected to cost $10.7 million to build along with the exhibition.”Inviting visitors to accompany this journey and observe the abundance of Polish avifauna is an opportunity to develop an intriguing, multi-layered story about the beauty of Polish nature, international exchange, mobility, export of ideas and technologies,” said WXCA. The World Expo 2020 will run from October 20, 2020, to April 21, 2021.
