I remember as a child, watching action heros thrown through windows, and being told by an older cousin that the glass wasn’t real, but was instead made from sugar.
From that point onwards, I’ve never been able to look at something transparent and wondered if it too, could be made from sugar.
The LA architects Kyle and Liz von Hasseln of The Sugar Lab have made these wonderings a reality. Adapting 3D printing techniques to use a mixture of sugar and alcohol, the Lab has shown proof of concept in layer printing using regular sugar, but hope to in future branch out into mixtures of different flavours.
The applications for the luxury pastry/ wedding cake sector are nearly endless.
