Dubai Unveils “The LOOP,” a Gigantic 93km Climate-Controlled Pedestrian and Cycling Freeway

URB’s 93-kilometer, “the LOOP” sustainable highway is part of the city’s effort to have more people in Dubai moving around more eco-friendly way. The roadway creates a year-round, pleasant environment for pedestrians and cyclists, making them the city’s primary modes of transit.

The project’s objective is to have 80 percent of people in Dubai get to and from work on foot or by bike by 2040, which aligns with Dubai’s 20-minute  concept. Currently, the team is conducting preliminary research for the project.

The LOOP’s Concept

Getting around town by bike and public transit is currently hampered by a lack of established links between the two. The more the two systems work together, the less hassle it will be for Dubai residents to take both bicycles and public transportation on their long daily trips.

THE LOOP also addresses vital concerns like safety and usability all year round. Thus, THE LOOP represents a radical departure from the conventional model of infrastructure design that prioritizes cars above pedestrians. It will improve the people’s health in Dubai by making urban transportation something they look forward to.

Baharash Bagherian, CEO of URB, remarked, “Redesigning Dubai’s future mobility infrastructure to become more than merely eco-friendly transit is our top priority. To view these structures not just as buildings but as places where people may go for necessities like food and water, as well as places where they can enjoy recreational and social activities.

No matter the temperature or precipitation level, using this form of infrastructure to go around should be a pleasurable and environmentally friendly experience.”

THE 20-MINUTE CITY

Since Dubai adopted the 2040 urban masterplan in recent years to become the world’s most liveable metropolis, urban transportation has become a priority for the officials. The project’s team knew the necessity of active mobility for thriving cities. Thus, the LOOP aligned with Dubai’s goal of creating a 20-minute city where residents can walk or bike to daily necessities and destinations within 20 minutes.

The initiative will replace vehicles and taxis in Dubai. To make Dubai the finest location to live, the goal is to make walking, jogging, and cycling the main modes of transportation and improve social infrastructure and facilities.

Furthermore, it will enhance neighborhood connectedness, resilience, and shared facilities to support Dubai 2040. It will be the world’s largest urban sharing facility where neighborhoods may share amenities, encouraging social, ecological, and economic sustainability.

A Pleasure For Multipurpose

The initiative will serve as a multipurpose venue, hosting retail shops alongside health and fitness centers, swimming pools, and outdoor play areas. To further encourage wellness tourism, THE LOOP will incorporate tourism assets like wellness hotels and facilities. Future well-being economies will be enabled by the project’s incorporation of pocket parks and allotments, encouraging social interaction and strengthening community bonds.

MULTI-FUNCTIONAL & RESILIENT

The Loop will be among the greenest planned corridors, with multifunctionality as its brightest aspect, which resolves mobility, resilience, social infrastructure, economic opportunities, and environmental issues.

Design-integrated technology is another intelligent feature that seeks to provide secure and accessible transportation at every event, boosting the city’s robustness.

Through its multiple vertical farms, it generates renewable energy and provides food security, making it much more sustainable urban transit in Dubai’s greatest-density regions.

Clean Kinetic Energy

The project’s running circuits use the kinetic pavement to harvest energy from every step. The system uses electromagnetic induction generators to displace from a person’s footstep vertically, which creates energy, then this energy is fed to generators to use as electricity.

The Energy harvesting flooring is built from recycled vehicle tires that flex when stepped on, generating kinetic energy. While also, sensors in the flooring offer real-time energy and footfall statistics.

The LOOP’s flooring will be immersive and informative for schoolchildren learning about kinetic energy. These kinetic walkways will encourage fun, socially sustainable engagement and let everyone have an impact.

Goes Beyond Sustainability

Improved public health, resilience to natural calamities, and climate change mitigation are just a few of the many positive outcomes of THE LOOP’s design. Building sustainable, equitable, and resilient cities is a priority for the United Nations, and THE LOOP supports these efforts.

The project aims to create a more sustainable and healthier city by motivating citizens to walk and ride bicycles along a green corridor that is both fun and safe.

Additionally, residents of THE LOOP can earn incentives for daily cycling and walking distances using a dedicated app. As a result, people will be healthier and happier, and urban mobility’s carbon footprint will be lighter.
