In a bold move to revitalize urban spaces and enhance connectivity, OMA’s innovative competition design for UniCredit’s HQ in Munich, Germany, takes center stage. The proposal envisions a distinctive plaza suspended above ground level to breathe life into an overlooked area and bolster public engagement. The project aims to transform this landscape into a vibrant urban hub along the prominent S-Bahn artery, a region known for its function but lacking public amenities.
UniCredit’s HQ Design: Elevating Urban Connectivity
The heart of the design lies in lifting Unicredit’s HQ on graceful columns, creating a harmonious link with the forthcoming pedestrian S-Bahn crossing. This transformation strategically positions the site as a “pivot,” bridging the Leuchtenbergring S-Bahn stop and the surrounding neighborhood. The elevated central plaza emerges as a dynamic urban haven, featuring verdant gardens, dining establishments, and communal spaces tailored for the city’s inhabitants. To facilitate accessibility, the bank’s operational essentials, including meeting spaces and logistics, nestle beneath the plaza, ensuring effortless ground-level entry.
Above the plaza, the bank’s offices are trapezoid-shaped structures, ascending 22 meters above street level. The architectural geometry, inspired by traditional Münchner rooftops, serves an ecological purpose. The façades’ inclination enhances air circulation and optimizes photovoltaic cells integrated into the exterior, aligning with sustainability goals. Triangular apertures punctuate the volumes, ushering in natural light and fostering a comfortable indoor climate for occupants.
The façade design showcases closed cavity units housing photovoltaic-embedded glass panels, forecasted to generate between 50 to 70 percent of the building’s annual energy consumption. The PV façade system significantly curbs internal solar heat gain, contributing to the structure’s energy efficiency and environmental consciousness.
This visionary proposal by OMA is a testament to reimagining urban architecture. It underscores UniCredit’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement. With its pioneering approach, Unicredit’s HQ breathes new life into Munich’s urban fabric, creating a transformative landmark that seamlessly marries design, connectivity, and ecological responsibility. As the design unfolds, UniCredit’s HQ emerges as an iconic beacon of progress and innovation in the heart of Munich’s landscape.
