2023 Australian Good Design Awards: 4 Projects Achieving Excellence in Class

In a remarkable showcase of innovation and creativity, the 2023 Australian Good Design Awards have honored four exceptional architectural design projects with their prestigious Best in Class recognition. This year’s edition of the 2023 Australian Good Design Awards celebrated excellence across the commercial, public, and residential sectors within architecture.

The 2023 Australian Good Design Awards

The coveted title of Architectural Design winner was bestowed upon Nightingale Village, a collaborative effort by six leading architecture firms, including Architecture Architecture, Austin Maynard Architects, Breathe, Clare Cousins Architects, Hayball, and Kennedy Nolan. Located in Brunswick, this medium-density residential precinct comprising 203 homes has redefined community-centered design and environmental sustainability standards.

In the category of Architectural Interior Design, the standout victor was the Delatite Cellar Door, designed by Lucy Clemenger Architects in harmony with Tommy Gordon’s landscape expertise. Nestled in the picturesque foothills of the Victorian Alps, this establishment offers a distinctive wine-tasting and dining experience while championing environmentally sustainable design principles.

The Architectural Place Design category celebrated the Angsila Oyster Scaffolding Pavilion, a visionary project by Chat Architects, the Angsila Fishermen Community, and INDA Chulalongkorn University. Situated off the coast of the historic Angsila Fishing village in Thailand, this innovative pavilion aims to rejuvenate the struggling fishing industry through an oyster eco-tourism model, inviting guests to dine on bamboo scaffolding while contributing to industry diversification.

Art Processors claimed the Architectural Installation Design award for their remarkable transformation of Pentridge Prison into an immersive visitor experience. In collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria), this initiative exposes attendees to unsettling truths about Australia’s history, making history come alive chillingly.

Furthermore, the 2023 Good Design of the Year Award went to BioScout by Tiller Design, an airborne disease-tracking device revolutionizing agricultural crop management through machine learning algorithms. In other notable accolades, Reef Design Lab’s Erosion Mitigation Units (EMU) earned the Good Design Award for Sustainability. Industrial designer Marc Newson also received the prestigious Australian Design Prize for his outstanding contributions to renowned brands like Qantas, Louis Vuitton, and Ferrari.

The 2023 Australian Good Design Awards have undeniably spotlighted excellence in architectural innovation, pushing boundaries and setting new standards across diverse sectors, cementing their reputation as a beacon for groundbreaking design.
