The Al.Mualla Cemetery Mural titled ‘A Matter of Life and Death’, designed by Egyptian architect Ahmed Al.Badawy with Ahmed Enab and Yasser Mehanna, was the winner of First Prize in the First Islamic Competition for Ornamenting Makkah Al.Mukarramah. This addition to one of the most important cemeteries in Mecca, Saudi Arabia pays tribute as well as takes cue from the tenets of Islam.
The flowing, amorphous design which arcs across a dramatic cliff face overlooking the site. Girih tiling is used as a basis for the design. Girih tilings, a system with similarities to self-similar fractal quasicrystalline constructs such as Penrose tilings, have been used in the construction of Islamic art since the 1200s. The basic components of the pattern are,
- A regular decagon.
- An elongated (irregular convex) hexagon.
- A bow tie (non-convex hexagon).
- A rhombus.
- A regular pentagon.
