The Abu Dhabi Airport Complex conceived by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) forms a new transportation hub designed to be a gateway into a city famous for its progressive architectural works. Since being approved by the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi, the next steps towards realization have already been taken; the firm is working on ground works and appointing a contractor to begin the large-scale build.
Abu Dhabi has been celebrated as a worldwide attraction demonstrating the limits of new materials and technologies in architecture. KPF realized that it was essential to create a lasting impression on the terminal’s 50 million users who will use it year round.
The Midfield Terminal Complex is an integral part to Plan Abu Dhabi 2030, a framework for the Emirate’s future development and projected population growth. Its presence will serve as a landmark to the area as it would be able to be seen from 1,500 meters away. The immense structure houses basic terminal functions while also including communal areas, an art gallery, an indoor park, and retail outlets.
Abu Dhabi’s new airport complex appears light and open as it is supported with large long-span arches reaching about 50 meters. These arches not only create unimpeded internal zones, but also can accommodate long-term adaptability to industry demands while allowing for a blurring of the demarcation between outdoor landscaping and the indoor civic space.
The structure also keeps to the 2030 plan which promotes sustainability through design; solid aluminum cladding and high performance angled glass help to reduce thermal impact while waste and grey water are used to irrigate onsite plantation.
