Nowadays people don’t just visit cafés to grab a coffee and go. If a coffee shop doesn’t have a defining or aesthetic quality, it will likely go unnoticed. Many coffee shops are making it their mission to have a unique interior that stands out of the crowded sea of cafés. Being an Instagram worthy venue these days is actually one of the ways a business can distinguish itself, and it’s probably how Café Yeonnam-dong in Seoul got famous. The café’s interior is designed to look like a 2D cartoon. It’s finishing, furnishing, and even kitchenware, from plates to cups, all have a 2D look, creating an optical illusion that gives visitors the feeling that they’ve entered the world of cartoon characters.

Straight Out of a Comic
The idea for this café came from a Korean T.V. show ‘W’ by Lee Jong-suk and Han Hyo-Joo. The show deals with a young girl who can enter the world of comics on a whim. The girl eventually falls in love with a character from her father’s comics and drawings. Perhaps the owner of the café young Eunjin Lee saw herself as one of the cartoon characters herself.
Optical Illusion through Black and White Lines
The café’s monochromatic white design and contoured lines create the optical illusion that the coffee shop is 2-dimensional. Although the café is small in size, it’s received a lot of buzz because of its Instagram worthy interior. By drawing wander-lusters from all over the world, the café has made a name for itself with its unique cartoonish design. Lee told The Daily Mail the reason behind this distinct coffee shop. She said: “We created the cafe because there was nothing like it in Korea or even the world. We tried to make a very unique concept. That is why we chose this style.”
More to come?
The café includes an indoor area with eight seats, complete with all kinds of cartoon-like furnishings. Its outdoor seating area with its nine seats also follows suit. The small coffee shop in the Yeonnam-dong district gets its name from its address. It serves a number of treats and beverages, from croissant sandwiches to yogurt smoothies. Not to mention their green tea lattes served in a quirky black and white mugs. Now that it is worldwide famous, the café is looking to expand into a franchise. So you won’t have to go to Seoul especially to visit. All images courtesy of Cafe Yeonnam-dong 239-20
