Calatrava supports Female Architects “Women are the salt of our lives. They give it flavour.”
In an event that held the unveiling of his first London project ‘Peninsula Place’, Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava commented on the results of the recent Women in Architecture survey which show an astonishing gap in salaries between males and females. He said “Women are the salt of our lives. They give it flavor.” He continued by describing the role his wife played in supporting his career: “My closest partner and the person I have been working with for 35 years has been my wife. She not only supported me and helped me but also framed my life.” He, also, confirmed that women in the architecture field are valued and that it would show in their salaries soon enough: “If their material value is not yet estimated, then just wait a second, you know, and it will change.” Calatrava followed the discussion by giving his audience a live drawing session, sketching a couple of kneeling female figures.
The results of the annual Women in Architecture survey, conducted by The Architect’s journal and The Architectural Review, were released earlier this month. They revealed a shocking gap in salaries between males and the females of the same role. However, the main initiator of all the controversy was the fact that, based on 2015’s survey results, the gap is widening and not the opposite.
