Cloud 11 in Bangkok is a massive mixed-use development by Snøhetta and MQDC that aspires to be a model for environmentally responsible urban communities. The plan addresses the urgent need for parks and green spaces in Bangkok’s developing South Sukhumvit neighborhood. The project’s construction has already begun, and the completion date is set for late 2024.
“We have the unique opportunity to construct not just a structure but an entirely new community in the heart of Bangkok. The South Sukhumvit community will benefit from this urban landmark by accessing green public areas and a thriving center for culture and creation. Because of the ever-increasing metropolitan population, it is essential to create environmentally and socially responsible neighborhoods that can support the demands of the cities of the future, “Snøhetta’s co-founder and principal architect Kjetil Traedal Thorsen claims.
Cloud 11
For MQDC, one of Thailand’s top property developers, Snøhetta and A49 Architects, have designed their grandest project in Asia. The project is a mixed-use structure covering a total area of 250.000 m2 in Bangkok’s soon-to-be-developed CyberTech district in South Sukhumvit.
The Sukhumvit neighborhood is a bustling commercial and entertainment district in the heart of Bangkok. The area is well-served by public transportation and features convenient services to meet the needs and preferences of its residents.
By establishing extensive green open areas and spaces for artists, creators, and tech innovators, the Cloud 11 project will transform a section of Sukhumvit into a hub for innovation and technology in the city. In light of its ambitious scope, this project strives to become a milestone that will symbolize the arrival of a new era in the world-famous capital of Thailand.
Publicly Accessible Space
Bangkok has a lot of historical and cultural sites, and its streets are always bustling, but the city could use more parks and greenery. Compared to the average of 39 square meters across 22 large Asian cities, Bangkok has one of the most negligible proportions of open green space per resident.
The Cloud 11 project answers local sustainability and livability initiatives such as Green Bangkok 2030 and Enter Bangkok2050. It will offer a space that will benefit the community by providing 24-hour accessibility to green spaces, community centers, and sophisticated amenities.
Thailand’s most extensive lawn and a vital natural space for the city
A large center lawn and several smaller pocket parks are part of the elevated gardens. In addition to providing a variety of neighborhood events, these areas also foster social interaction. The central plaza serves as the social hub of the developments, and its lush landscaping contributes to the overall sense of openness and lightness. The building has plenty of vents for fresh air, and the canal nearby that carries treated water is on display for the public’s instruction.
Service Integration
Snøhetta and MQDC are introducing a brand new circulation network at multiple scales throughout Cloud 11. This includes streets, promenades, escalators, and staircases, all reminiscent of a village’s layout. The integrated nature of all the programs allows the creation of a comprehensive system that serves all customers’ needs.
Cloud 11 will have a centralized logistics system to ensure the building’s maximum potential versatility and adaptability. All retail floors will be connected to a mechanized storehouse and central kitchen. Food and non-food products will be distributed throughout the building, including office buildings and other public areas.
“Cloud 11”: A distinctive kind of cityscape
The goal of the Cloud 11 initiative is to transform the existing ecosystem into a new, high-quality setting for residents to enjoy. Multiple restaurants serviced by a single kitchen, a fitness center, a wide variety of shops, and two hotels are all part of the plan to meet the community’s needs.
The plan also includes cultural amenities such as a library, educational spaces, and innovative coworking areas designed for the remote/onsite hybrid workforce. The Cloud 11’s proximity to the BTS Skytrain station, which is directly across the street, also facilitates its accessibility via public transit for both tourists and locals.
“Regarding projects that successfully address the needs of entrepreneurs, community groups, and future generations, I do not doubt that Cloud 11 will become the gold standard. As part of MQDC’s mission to improve the quality of life for all, we have prioritized incorporating future generations’ needs into Cloud 11’s design. This includes expanding Southeast Asia’s innovation ecosystem, creating more employment opportunities for its citizens, and improving local communities’ living standards.” As per the words of Mr. Onza Janyaprasert, the Project Director of Cloud 11.
