Sustainability is as much economy as it is ecology. An object’s imbedded energy speaks to how much energy was expended to produce said object. It is a major element to how ‘green’ or sustainable something is and it is so far not a very well known or cared about trait. This chair, the Flex Chair by Steve Watson is an experiment in how much ‘absence’ can be used to make a full form. Constructed of a cold-formed aluminum plate frame and a flexible neoprene sheet, its geometry allows flex, creating a chair that holds its user rather than just holding them up.
