To provide a better perspective of the city, the online map is updated on daily basis. It reveals the astonishing pace at which the city is changing in real time. Furthermore, the disparity in investment from one neighborhood to another can be noticed. The map covers Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Manhattan, and the Bronx. It also ranks projects by cost, size, and height.

The “Active Major Construction” map of NYC DoB is a user-friendly map, presenting detailed information to architects and NYC residents about the construction trends in the Big Apple. Moreover, the data lets users analyze what’s being built and where.
The website has categorized the projects into square footage, estimated cost, and the number of proposed housing units. According to the website, there are 7,457 active permits filed and 197,913,815 square feet of construction happening in NYC. Also, there are nearly 2,000 more new buildings coming up, in comparison to renovations. The city is capable of accommodating this many new projects, by expanding upward instead of expanding horizontally. The largest-scale project shown in the NYC DoB map is 30 Hudson Yards at 500 West 33rd Street. This 3.9 million-square-foot mixed-use skyscraper, spearheaded by the Tishman Corporation, cost $576.68 million. So, in addition to being the biggest, 30 Hudson Yards is also the most expensive project being built in NYC. Norman Foster’s 50 Hudson Yards, at 410 10th Avenue, comes in a close second to 30 Hudson Yards, in term of scale, with a total area of 2.91 million square feet. However, the residential conversion happening at One Wall Street is the second in terms of cost.

The one information that the map doesn’t convey is the affordability of the residential towers that are coming up. If made available, this information would be extremely helpful for current residents and potential New Yorkers.
