The Shanghai Industrial Pavilion hosts some of the most renown international events every year and is composed of various multifunctional and flexible spaces.
A popular destination for people of all kinds, the expo is the perfect opportunity to parade the technological advances of a region through design. UnSangDong Architects’ new Korean Corporate Pavilion design strives to do just this: to show off the innovation and progress of a country that had been lagging in terms of technological advacement since the Korean War through the chosen subject of green city and green life.
Not only that, but the new structure will help to promote burgeoning relations between Korea and China while demonstrating Korea’s competitive strengths in the high-tech market.
The concept is centered around combining natural and synthetic elements. Branching from this idea, UnSangDong Architects created a phrase that would characterize the entire building: Green-Imagination, the idea that you can utilize the unrestrained potential of nature in order to make an imagination realized.
In saying this, the design concept also helps to address growing global concerns having to do with global warming and the depletion of natural resources; these concerns are answered through the pavilion by showing how an introspective study of nature can help to resolve the disconnection between the technological and natural.
This symbiosis of the human and tech is shown in their design with the undulating landscape of the ceiling structure with the applied LED lighting “digital skin” demonstrating how a natural element can be designed well while utilizing new sustainable materials.
