The Japanese artist Kumi Yamashita, who is Living and working in New York City, has a wonderful series of work using simple shapes and objects with light to create the most incredible shadows. Using a single light source that projects light onto the material, Yamashita forms silhouettes of people and faces in the series entitled Light & Shadow.
“I sculpt shadow with light or sometimes light with shadow, but both function in essentially the same manner. I take objects and carve and place them in relation to a single light source. The complete artwork is therefore comprised of both the material (the solid objects) and the immaterial (the light or shadow).”
