MAD Architects Reveal Two Art Installations Expressing Light and Darkness

Ma Yansong, the founder of MAD Architects, reveals two new art installations. The installations express the studio’s diverse futuristic vision. The two installations are focused on presenting contemporary visions of light in completely two different contexts.

The first one is called ‘Light’ and is presented in the ‘Art at Fuliang 2021’ art festival held in Jingdezhen. The festival’s theme is focused on highlighting the spiritual identity of Hanxi village in Fuliang County. The changing topography of mountains, waters, and green fields is both watching MAD’s ‘Light’ installation and being watched by it. The installation is even ‘light’ in terms of its visual weight; it blends into the context seamlessly.

In the morning, the installation creates a spiritual medium to connect with nature and experience light. When the night approaches, the installation becomes the ‘light’ itself and is an experience of connection with darkness.

The second installation is the exhibition design ‘Forma Fantasia’, for the artist Liu Wei’s ‘Nite-Tiered Pagoda’ work of art. This is a collaborative, cross-disciplinary project between nine groups of artists, architects, and graphic designers – given the opportunity to experience spatial and visual magic. ‘Forma Fantasia’ will be present for the newly completed Pingshan Art Museum visitors in Shenzhen through October.

MAD Architects’ leader, Ma Yansong visualizes his ‘Forma Fantasia’ in a black, shadowless room – abstracting the space of all its characteristics other than one thing: light. This proposes uncertainties; leaves the viewer with no clues or interpretations other than their own. This design strongly supports MAD Architects’ approach of prioritizing simulating sensations depending on abstract spatial characteristics over concrete details.

MAD Architects is a global architecture firm that was founded in Beijing in 2004. Its designs are known to be futuristic and organic. The architects focus on adopting new technologies along with philosophical thoughts, to express the natural and spiritual identity of the Eastern World. MAD Architects’ core design philosophy is their vision for a city for the future called ‘Shanshui’, which is created to fit the residents’ needs and emotions. MAD’s ‘Light’ and ‘Forma Fantasia’ are products of their diversity and inspiration by nature.
