Museum of No Spectators l John Marx + J Absinthia Vermut

The Museum of No Spectators, a dynamic pop-up museum project aimed at redefining the conventional museum experience, has returned triumphantly to Burning Man 2023, boasting fresh artwork and exciting enhancements. Established in 2019 by architect John Marx and artist Absinthia Vermut, this innovative museum urges visitors to actively engage in shaping its annual exhibitions. Museum of No Spectators’ Concept

John Marx emphasizes, “The Museum of No Spectators celebrates the artist in everyone, welcoming individuals to share their creative essence, regardless of their expertise.” In 2023, this extraordinary museum will showcase works by renowned artists like Madelon Vriesendorp, Hank Willis Thomas, and Deborah Willis while embracing impromptu public contributions.

This year, the volunteer-built museum has expanded its original 1400 sqft steel-framed, aluminum-clad structure, effectively enlarging the gallery space and casting a mesmerizing iridescent radiance under the sun’s glow.

The Museum of No Spectators received an overwhelmingly positive response for including poetry in 2022, prompting an expanded focus on poetry and spoken word programs for 2023. Visitors can now enjoy daily readings and workshops, with several poets participating in this creative endeavor. Blank paper pages are readily available to encourage spontaneous writing, and a brand-new stage has been incorporated for captivating performance art.
