Paul Clemence Captures the Beauty of Haus Balma: Kengo Kuma’s Swiss Marvel

Paul Clemence’s latest mesmerizing photo series delves into the architectural marvel known as Haus Balma, crafted by the acclaimed Kengo Kuma Architects. Nestled amidst the breathtaking beauty of Vals, at the foothills of the majestic Graubünden Mountains, this unique building was commissioned for Truffer AG, a well-established family enterprise founded in 1983.
Truffer AG specializes in exquisitely processed Valser quartzite stone slabs, which have been favored by notable architects in the region, including visionaries like Peter Zumthor in his Therme Vals and renowned designers like Norman Foster and Philippe Stark.

Yuki Ikeguchi, Kengo Kuma Architects, Remarked, “Our concept emphasizes the importance of establishing a balance among manmade structures, natural elements, and the surrounding ecosystem. As a result, we never start a project without first carefully considering the local environment and the relevant aspects of the area’s history and culture. To arrive at the building’s layout and shape, architects search for a unifying principle and work to perfect its harmony with other design considerations.”

The Beauty of Haus Balma

The vision for Haus Balma was conceived by Kengo Kuma in 2012, and after a decade of intricate craftsmanship, it was finally completed in 2022. The lower levels of the structure house the company’s offices, while two gracefully designed apartments grace the upper floors.
Despite its contemporary allure, Haus Balma seamlessly integrates into the charm of the traditional mountain village, avoiding any intrusive presence. Instead, the design embraces the local architectural essence while playfully celebrating a harmonious union with modernity.

Paul Clemence’s lens skillfully captures the essence of Haus Balma, emphasizing the remarkable use of materials that gracefully melds with the surrounding landscape. The building’s form echoes the grace of a pagoda, drawing inspiration from the geometric brilliance of a triangle. Along the façade, the stones appear to levitate, initiating a captivating interplay between the solidity and lightness of this natural material.
Each stone panel, meticulously held in place by over 5,000 precision clamps ingeniously integrated into the stone and wood, enhances the visual poetry of the structure. In total, 882 stone panels contribute to this remarkable architectural artistry.
