Foster + Partners, the renowned British architectural firm, is collaborating closely with Petrolina Group on an initial design to revitalize the Larnaca seafront to benefit the city’s current inhabitants, the next generation, and prospective tourists. About two kilometers of oil facilities will be relocated north of the city center to make way for the construction.
“The design both preserves and improves the city’s unique character while ushering in a promising new era for the metropolis. Our method was created in tandem with city officials, expanding upon existing city efforts to foster long-term prosperity.” Senior associate at Foster + Partners, Ben Scott, said this.
Larnaca Seafront’s Masterplan
The Larnaca-Dhekelia Road, which will serve as the development’s centerpiece, will be upgraded to become a “pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare. Many low-rise office, apartment, and hotel buildings will be organized around sidewalks and public spaces between the street and the Larnaca seafront.
Foster + Partners claims that these blocks will be used to create new low-income communities that are a natural expansion of the urban character of Larnaca. Four waterways running inland from the coast will be re-shaped to create natural boundaries between the various residential areas. The studio also declares that the expansion will honor the city’s industrial past by preserving remnants of the former oil refinery.
Foster + Partners’ renderings also depict the addition of a beach and walkway to the Larnaca Seafront, which would take the place of the existing industrial landscape. Wooden structures housing eateries and cafés would line the shoreline.
These enhancements will stimulate the coastal area and the maritime economy, provide new possibilities for the city’s inhabitants, and bring new residents and companies to the city. In coordination with local officials, Foster + Partners are developing an environmentally friendly transportation strategy to link the masterplan area to the rest of the city and the surrounding region.
