One of the entries included in the shortlist for the Flinders Street Station Competition, the proposal by Zaha Hadid Architects, is a stunning vision for the future skyline of Melbourne.A requirement of the original prompt, that the existing and historical station be maintained and somehow respected in future proposals, is fulfilled in a somewhat circumspect manor by the studio.
The proposal exists as a logical progression of the historic building, moving forward while still providing viewing shafts from the new to the old.
The new station will act as a multi-faceted transport hub for the city and its surroundings, as well as a destination in and of itself, separate from its captive audience of travelers.
The scheme will act on pedestrian and street transport flows, providing a relaxing and yet exciting release from the city rush- fitting in with, while offering respite from the everyday bustle.
