The Situation Room is an installation made by the collaboration of Jana Winderen and Marc Fornes and commissioned by storefront for Art and Architecture with the support of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. It is a project that reflects on the contemporary conditions emerging between the realms of digital and physical existence through the use of a light-weight, ultra-thin self-supported shell structure. To invite the visitors to question the properties of matter the built environment that surrounds them, the architects collapsed sound, light and form in an object that emits an aura of experiential tension that results in a “sublime dialogue between the comfort of the known and an uneasy interaction with the unknown” . The combination of the envelope, acoustic membrane, structural design and distributed lighting all work together through a coat of neon-effect; it acts a sound object that absorbs and contrasts the Storefornt Gallery thus blurring perception of the known through its abstract, spatial, formal and acoustic interchangeability and form.
