Sweet as One’ Candy Carpet by Craig & Karl
A sweet collaboration between Craig and Karl brought a great piece of art to the streets of China. The duo has been collaborating with Studio AllRightsReserved to produce a massive [607-feet by 23-feet] wide brightly coloured candy carpet; the outcome is truly one-of-a-kind. Inspired by the bright colours of aboriginal art as well as the 80s kitsch, Craig and Karl creatively used 13 tons of candy pieces to bring a little colourful touch to the business district of Chengdu, an area that is characterized by the steel and glass finish of fashion stores.
The bright-coloured candy installation spans 14,000 square feet holding many symbols and patterns. Images of blooming flowers were added as a representation of good luck; in addition, figures of pandas and polka dots added a playful quality to the installation.
The process of creating the carpet involved a massive grid, where individual cubes were filled with pieces of candy in order to create the overall image. The project is not only a way of celebrating China’s New Year; it is also a representation of the ‘Sweet as One’ exhibition. The purpose of this beautiful artwork is to raise awareness to the difficulties faced by underprivileged children.
The tons of candy involved in the project, along with 15,000 lunches, will be donated to the less fortunate children in the city. The entire installation was created by 2,000 enthusiastic volunteers; the sense of unity involved in the making, in addition to the outcome of the project is remarkable.
