The rebuilt CCH – Congress Center Hamburg, based on designs by the architectural cooperation agn leusmann / Time Hupe Architekten, was one of the winners of the BDA Hamburg Architecture Award earlier this week. The convention center in Hamburg, which has 36,000 square meters of space provided and is one of Europe’s most modern and expansive convention centers, was chosen by the jury as one of the three first-place winners.
Bernd Aufderheide, president and CEO of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH expressed his excitement about the prize on behalf of the CCH – Congress Center Hamburg. “Hamburg has been, and will continue to be, a sought-after destination for congresses because of this spectacular facility. The new CCH strengthens our position and gives Hamburg a permanent spot among World’s leading travel destinations.
A Brief History of The Building:
The CCH – Convention Center Hamburg was the most extensive congress facility in Europe when it opened its doors in 1973. The mega-wide construction was then reconstructed and refurbished at the end of April 2014 with the assistance of the architects from agn leusmann to maintain this top spot in light of contemporary considerations.
The BDA is the German architects association (Bund Deutscher Architektinnen und Architekten). Aiming to raise the bar for contemporary architecture, the BDA Hamburg presents the “Architektur Preis,” or Architecture Prize, every two years to recognize outstanding architecture in the fabulous city of Hamburg. The prize is granted to the architects and the construction company in recognition of their combined success. The winners grant certificates, and the public is given access to the winning structures on a unique BDA website in a live exhibition.
From a total of 63 applicants in the Hamburg metropolitan region, the jury this year chose projects finished between 2020 and 2022, awarding three equally ranked first prizes, five equally ranked second prizes, and four similarly ranked third prizes.
The Remodeled Congress Center Hamburg – Exceptionally flexible and operational:
The new CCH, which has a total size of 36,000 square meters, is impressive for its exquisite architecture, well-planned room layouts, and first-rate media equipment. Now, the congress facility can accommodate 12,000 guests at once.
Parts of the structure were removed and replaced by modern volumes to maximize building operations’ sustainability and efficiency. The listed hall in the center, where performances by artists like ABBA, Deep Purple, and Queen took place back then, has undergone a comprehensive renovation and is supplied with a modern building management system. Designers kept the ceiling’s distinctive pitcher light design; however, it had the most recent LED technology.
“The modernized and revamped CCH – Congress Center Hamburg continues to fascinate guests as a cutting-edge, attractive structure that leaves nothing to desire. It’s a must to visit the magnificent entry hall. It draws people in, provoking their interest in different experiences. Additionally, the new CCH has architectural characteristics that provide maximum adaptability. Noted Heike Mahmoud, CCH’s chief operating officer.
“Regarding the BDA prize, we are delighted. Being so near to the city’s core, next to Planten un Blomen Park and the Radisson Blu hotel, it was a special project for us to renovate and enhance this practically forgotten location. Knowing that our architecture contributed immensely to this, it is good to see this location in the center of Hamburg serving as a center of attention and inviting tourists from all over the world”.
