Esja Architecture, a firm based in Copenhagen and Reykjavik, has recently unveiled ambitious plans for an extraordinary architectural marvel atop Mount Bjólfur in Iceland. Named the “Ring of Bjólfur,” this stunning ring-shaped viewing platform will be perched 2100 feet above sea level, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Seydisfjordur, a picturesque town, and the fjord where the sole ferry connection to mainland Europe departs.
Ring of Bjólfur’s Enchanted Fjord Overlook
The Ring of Bjólfur, with its impressive 105-foot diameter, will provide visitors with an uninterrupted circular walkway and seating arrangement along its 330-foot circumference. What’s remarkable is that this architectural wonder is designed to be entirely wheelchair accessible, showcasing a commitment to inclusivity.
The project will harmonize with its rugged natural surroundings, anchored securely to the landscape at four points. Its construction will feature concrete for the primary structure, locally sourced larch for the inner railing, and stainless steel for the outer railing. This material palette not only complements the pristine environment but also stands resilient against the region’s challenging weather conditions, requiring minimal maintenance.
The Ring of Bjólfur derives its name from the Viking Bjólfur, believed to rest eternally within this mountain, and pays homage to the Viking tradition of burial with prized possessions. Esja Architecture, selected to bring this visionary project to life following a 2021 competition, anticipates completion in 2024. This remarkable structure promises to become a symbol of both Iceland’s natural beauty and its rich historical heritage.
