Well, after three years of controversy and critics as well as proponents chiming in, London’s Shard skyscraper, designed by Renzo Piano, is complete. And they’re celebrating.
Prime Minister of Qatar Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani and Duke of York Prince Andrew Albert Edward will together inaugurate the building before a massive laser show lights up the night, accompanied by music played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
It is an interesting fact that Qatar owns around 95% of the tower- but hey! 5% of the building’s 1,106 ft of height comes out to just 55.3 feet, so the British building is really on scale with the rest of the city!
Located on the southern bank of the Thames each of the building’s 72 floors, sky gardens overlook the city for some 40 miles on a clear day, and provide natural light and ventilation to the interiors.
These interiors will consist of a mix of office, retail, and residential programs as well as luxury hotels and restaurants.
Oh yes, and it is now the tallest building in Western Europe. Cheers!
