A project that was started in 2009 has finally come to completion, the result, the Turin University Faculty Building by Foster and Partners, a sweeping structure that is environmentally and site conscious while still making a statement. The complex is shaped in a triangular fashion as a reinterpretation of a traditional cloistered quadrangle often seen in University planning and takes up an area of 44,928 square meters.Cut away from the built form is a round uncovered courtyard space designed to be used as informal event space as well as to provide opportunities for more public interaction and gatherings.
The façade and exterior of the building is characterized by brushed metal bands and ribbons of sky-reflecting glazing that keeps the structure from looking too sculpturesque. The building is set to accommodate 5,000 students and house the faculties of law and political science for the University, all set within two volumes lined by a single canopy. The canopy, with its large overhang, was designed to introduce effective passive cooling strategies. This feature in combination with the intelligent building systems and tri-generation heating and cooling will allow the facility to use twenty percent less energy than other buildings of the same size and function.
Around the facility sensitivity to the site was, both historical and environmental, can be seen through the rounded edges of the built structures as well as the landscaping around the facility. A landmark hardscaping measure employs 7200 photocatalytic paving tiles that help neutralize the movement of pollutants like dust. Bordered by a meandering green ‘philosopher’s walk’, the design encourages pedestrian movement through linking pathways and easy access to local rail and bus services, while still providing roof gardens and light-filled quiet study spaces.
