Marcin Urbanek, Piotr Michalewicz, and Łukasz Mieszkowski of Warsaw, Poland recently received the first prize for the international Sobibór Museum-Memorial competition executed by Dr. Tomasz Kranz on behalf of the State Museum at Majdanek. The competition is part of a multi-stage international project to build a memorial museum in Sobibór, the site of a former Nazi-German extermination camp and a mass grave for the camp’s victims.
The museum and memorial complex would be built to properly protect the site, honor the victims, and also educate the public about the site’s dark and tragic history.
The Jury, presided by Prof. Andrzej Kadłuczka, selected the first-prize entry as the most suitable design concept that fulfilled the educational and memorial purposes of the Sobibór Museum-Memorial Site.
The competition was organized with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage by the State Museum at Majdanek in Lublin in cooperation with the Foundation for Polish-German Reconciliation.
